Serrano Ham

What Is Serrano Ham?

Serrano ham, or Jamón Serrano, is a traditional Spanish cured ham made from selected pork that is salted and slowly cured over time.

Unlike cooked ham, it does not need to be cooked before serving. The curing process gradually develops its aroma, texture and balanced savory character, making it a classic of Spanish cuisine.

Serrano Ham vs. Prosciutto: What Sets Them Apart

Serrano ham and Italian prosciutto are both dry-cured hams, making prosciutto a useful reference for American consumers discovering Spanish ham.

But they are not the same product. Serrano ham comes from Spain, while prosciutto comes from Italy, and each follows its own production methods, curing traditions and flavor profiles. Serrano typically offers a balanced savory character and a firm yet delicate texture.

Why Curing Time Matters

Time is fundamental. Curing is not simply a preservation method: it is the process through which the ham gradually develops its characteristic aroma, flavor and texture.

At Monte Nevado, our approach is based on allowing each ham the time it needs and following its evolution throughout curing.

Natural Cellars and Slow Curing

Our Serrano ham is produced and cured in Spain. In our curing cellars, our ham masters monitor each piece as they mature and determine when it has developed the aroma, flavor and texture we look for.

How Curing Shapes Flavor and Texture

During curing, moisture gradually decreases while the ham’s aroma, flavor and texture become more defined. The result is a firm texture, a balanced savory flavor and an aroma that becomes more defined as the ham cures.

Choosing Your Format

Monte Nevado Serrano ham is available in different formats depending on how you want to enjoy and serve it.

Pre-Sliced Serrano Ham, Ready to Eat

The simplest way to enjoy it. Already sliced and ready to eat, it requires no carving or special equipment.

It is ideal for tapas, charcuterie boards, sandwiches, appetizers or everyday meals, and an easy starting point for anyone discovering Jamón Serrano for the first time.

Boneless Serrano Ham, Ready to Serve

Boneless Serrano ham is easy to handle, portion and slice, making it a versatile ready-to-serve option for home use.

Whole Leg, Bone-In

A whole Serrano ham leg offers the traditional Spanish experience, allowing you to carve thin slices directly from the ham.

It is ideal for gatherings, celebrations and anyone looking to enjoy the complete ritual of Spanish ham.

How to Serve It

Serrano ham is ready to eat and does not need to be cooked. Serve it in thin slices, ideally closer to room temperature, to better appreciate its aroma and texture.

Enjoy it on its own, with bread, as part of a tapas spread or charcuterie board, or incorporate it into sandwiches, appetizers and simple recipes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is It Ready to Eat?

Yes. Serrano ham is cured and ready to eat without cooking. Pre-sliced packs can simply be opened and served.

How Long Does Serrano Ham Last Once Opened?

Pre-sliced packs are best within three to five days of opening, kept refrigerated. A whole bone-in ham lasts several weeks once you start carving, as long as you protect the cut face after each use. For boneless ham, follow the instructions on the label.

What Is the Difference Between Serrano and Iberico Ham?

Both are Spanish cured hams, but they belong to different categories. Serrano ham is traditionally made from white pigs, while Iberico ham comes from Iberian pigs and follows its own classification and production standards.

We also offer 100% Iberico Bellota and 50% Iberico Cebo for those who want to explore Iberico ham.

Do I Need Anything Special to Carve a Whole Leg?

We recommend a stable ham holder and an appropriate ham-carving knife. If you prefer not to carve a whole leg, choose pre-sliced or boneless ham.
